Attenborro­w, Young toast of Tasmania after nine-hole triumphs

THE inaugural Tasmanian Play 9 State Final was held Sunday in overcast conditions at Launceston Golf Club.

A total of 38 qualifiers from clubs across the state who posted the best 9-hole competitio­n scores between March and December last year qualified to tee it up.

The inaugural women’s title was won by Prospect Vale Golf Club’s Glenda Attenborro­w with 22 points. Kingston Beach Golf Club’s Caroline Johnston was close behind in second place with 21 points.

Wynyard Golf Club’s Sharon Baker and Orford’s Deborah Baker tied for third, with 17 points.

The men’s inaugural title was won by favourite and eight-handicappe­r Jordan Young from Tasmania Golf Club, with 17 stableford points.

Young won by two points from Prospect Vale Golf Club’s Keith Bradford.

Freycinet’s Peter Faulkner, Felix Kennedy from Oatlands, Daniel Lyden from Llanherne and Orford’s John Rainbird tied for third place on 14 points.

Winners and runners-up have each won an all-expenses-paid trip to the Play 9 National Final at Pelican Waters Golf Club during the Queensland Open on March 13.

Australia’s best senior golfers will tee off today at the Mowbray Golf Club for the Men’s Tasmanian Senior Amateur Championsh­ip.

Among the field of 52 competitor­s for the three-day event are 28 Tasmanians.

They include local member Michael Leedham, Prospect Vale’s Robbie Berne and Launceston Golf Club’s Shayne Walker.

Other Tasmanians expected to perform well include Wynyard’s Craig Clark, Huon Valley’s Dennis Kelly and

Royal Hobart David Bliss.

Prospect Vale’s Ryan Thomas won the Bill Wellington Lindisfarn­e Cup last weekend at Tasmania Golf Club.

The plus-three handicappe­r had rounds of 73 and 67 to finish a stroke in front of Launceston’s Mitch Van Noord and Royal Hobart’s Joey Bower.
