Grange set hits market
AN entire set of Penfolds Grange including the first bottle from 1951 has hit the market.
The set includes all vintages from 1951-2015 and the first 36 of those are signed by the late inventor of Penfolds Grange, Max Schubert.
MW Wines managing director Nick Stamford said Schubert made the first bottle of Grange in secret – meaning it was not made commercially available – making the 1951 bottle extremely rare.
“They’re so valuable they’ve gone beyond drinking … the oldest ones can be variable in their drinkability,” he said.
The set came into the hands of MW Wines from one collector who had a personal relationship with Schubert.
Bidding starts at $315,000 plus 15 per cent buyers premium, and closes 6pm on April 28.
