BATTLE FOR TOP SPOT IN ACE’S FAREWELL

- DAN THURLEY

A BLOCKBUSTER NPL clash between Glenorchy Knights and South Hobart at KGV on Saturday could see the two sides separated at the top of the table for the first time this season.

After three rounds they sit first and second, boasting undefeated records with South Hobart’s superior goal difference earning them top spot. “We’ll expect a tough game of course, they’re in a nice little bit of form at the moment,” said Knights coach James Sherman.

“They’re going to offer us plenty of problems and we’ll try and do the same.”

Sherman said the fact that it was a top-of-the-table clash did not add any more importance to the tie.

“There’s plenty of football to go in terms of the league. It’s handy to get on top of sides early.

“But it’s not essential. We’ll treat it just like we would if it was any other game.”

It will also be the farewell match for 2020 golden boot winner Alex Walter ahead of his transfer to Hume City FC in the NPL Victoria. “We’re disappointed to lose him, but we’re getting someone to move on to a much higher level and we hope he (does) well,” Sherman said.

Meanwhile, the Devonport Strikers are hoping their game against the Olympia Warriors will see a return to winning ways following a second loss in three games at UTas Stadium last week.

“It’ll be another challenge,” said Strikers assistant coach Chris McKenna. “On their day they’ll beat anyone and if we roll out with a performance like we did on the weekend, we’ll be in some trouble.

Clarence Zebras will play their first home game of the season when they host the Kingborough Lions at Wentworth Park.
