Hamilton reigns yet again in Spain

-

Lewis Hamilton claimed his fifth successive Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen after a Mercedes pit-stop masterstroke.

Hamilton moved on to 98 career wins after a surprise second change of tyres hoodwinked Red Bull to lift him 14 points clear of Verstappen in the drivers’ standings.

An improving Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren) finished sixth.

“It was a really great strategy by the team. What a day!” beamed Hamilton, who was quick to acknowledge the smattering of fans allowed in to watch, a rare occurrence in the time of coronavirus. “It is great to see. I saw a British flag out there which I haven’t seen for a long, long time,” he said.

Hamilton had set off from pole for the 100th time but was beaten to the first corner by Verstappen, with Charles Leclerc for Ferrari dishing out the same treatment on Valtteri Bottas on turn two.

Australia’s greatest player, Lauren Jackson, has backed star Opals centre Liz Cambage’s stance on racial equality and hopes Cambage will play at the Tokyo Olympics despite her boycott threats to “sit out”.

Cambage caused a storm on Friday

when she shared two images – one of a Jockey advertisement as it was unveiled as the official underwear supplier for the Australian Olympic and Paralympic teams and one shot from the Australian Olympic Committee’s uniform unveiling.

Cambage slammed the photos for the lack of diversity, writing on the

Jockey ad: “HOW AM I MEANT TO REPRESENT A COUNTRY THAT DOESN’T EVEN REPRESENT ME.”

Jackson said she supported Cambage’s push for racial equality.

“Liz is one of the finest players that we’ve ever had representing us,” Jackson said. “She has been a core part of the Opals for the past decade,

and it would be fitting to see her on the dais in Tokyo. The Opals are ranked second in the world and have a really great opportunity to claim the gold medal, in both Tokyo and the World Cup next year. I really hope that she is a part of that group.”

The Opals announce a final squad for the Tokyo Olympics in early July.
