Olympic dream dashed for former Hockeyroo Morgan

- JULIAN LINDEN

FORMER Hockeyroos captain Georgina Morgan has been left out of the updated squad of players in contention for the Tokyo Olympics just weeks after winning an appeal to be reconsidered for selection.

Only 16 players will eventually be picked for the Tokyo

Olympics but Morgan’s chances are now all but over after she was left out of newly appointed head coach Katrina Powell’s 27-member squad.

“Sadly for Georgina, she has missed out on this occasion,” said Powell.

The squad did include two additions: goalkeeper Rachael Lynch, who joined Morgan in appealing against her omission from the original squad, and Savannah Fitzpatrick.

“Across the duration Rachael has shown herself to be up to international standard and has been selected on her performance in this training block,” Powell said. “Savannah played really well in the five intra-squad games and proved herself to be a constant goal scoring threat in the penalty circle.”

“She has shown improvement in key areas that she needed to work on.

“Coupled with her previous international experience, having Savannah in the group will be beneficial as we ramp up our preparations for Tokyo.” Morgan and Lynch lodged their appeals against being left out last year, and their case was finally heard by a panel made up of Australian cricket legend Belinda Clark, ex-Australian Olympic Committee chief Fiona de Jong and former rugby league judicial expert Alan Sullivan.

The Hockeyroos will travel to New Zealand later this month to play in a four-match test series.
