SFL keen to fly the flag for the South
Skipper says players ‘can get the job done’
THE SFL is keen to restore its representative football reputation as the side travels to Ulverstone to take on the NWFL today.
The southern league side has battled in recent years against other leagues, including an 88-point smashing at the hands of the NWFL last time they met in 2017, but cocaptain Jordan Lane expects that losing streak to end in 2021.
“We’re pretty confident we’ve got the squad that’ll be able to get the job done,” Lane said.
“We’ve got a lot of talented blokes, blokes who will give it their all.
“It’s (an) honour the South.”
The side is stacked with SFL talent including Lane’s co-captain and Cygnet teammate Thor Boscott, Huonville duo Cameron Johns and Ryan Ward and Dodges Ferry veteran Jack Siggins. to represent
A key duo in Huonville’s Brady Jones (back) and Hobart’s Alex Gilmour (shoulder) both went down last Saturday with injury.
The SFL had threatened during the pre-season to make players who made themselves unavailable miss league games but any suspensions will not be announced until next week.
The NWFL skippered by
Quade Byard Docker Harry side will be Devonport’s and Burnie Walters and
features a host of former TSL players.
Lane said some players were familiar with opposition players — “there’s some big bodies and good footballers” — but the squad was focused on its own game plan.
“It’s all just sticking to what you know and having that mentality of not giving up and going as hard as you can,” he said.
He said he wasn’t expecting to be made co-captain at age 19.
“It was a bit of a shock but it’s going to help me grow as a player and a person and it’s a really good opportunity,” Lane said.
Lane said the side training well and in form.
“We probably haven’t played that well against the other rep sides but we’ve got a good squad together and we will be able to give it to them,” Lane said.
