MATHS RELAY ADDS UP TO A FUN TIME

- JARROD LAWLER

IT was a battle of brains on Sunday as some of Tassie’s brightest young minds competed to be crowned champions at the 2021 Mathematical Association of Tasmania Mathematics Relay.

Almost 700 year 5 to 12 students gathered at four locations around the state where teams of four tested their wits in a variety of brain bursting maths challenges. At the Hobart event, Waimea Heights Primary School student Sam Geason participated in his second maths relay and said he had loved maths for as long as he could remember.

“I’ve always enjoyed maths and I really like all the different sorts of maths there are, like problem solving and coding and everything else,” he said.

“It was a lot of fun and good to see everyone with different abilities doing it and I definitely improved since I did it in year 3 so that was good and I had a lot fun with my teammates.”

Relay organiser Lauren Beams said the events were a huge success.

”All four events across the state went really well and it was great to be back after having last year off,” Mrs Beams said. “It’s a great event to challenge the kids’ brains and for them to see that maths is fun.”
