SCHOOLS HAVE THE WINNING MOVES

- DAMITA LAMONT

DANCE is more than an art-form for students and families of Jenina’s Dance Workshop, it is also about the welcoming and friendly community it creates.

The Glenorchy school, which has been operating for 31 years, was named joint winner with House of Dance in the Mercury’s online poll which asked subscribers “Which is

Tasmania’s best dance school?” The two Hobart schools each received 39.86 per cent of the votes.

“There are not many jobs where you absolutely love what you are doing and are so grateful for every moment,” principal/director Jenina Evans said.

“The kids are just so much fun, I feel like I have 360 daughters or sons and they become like my family.”

Seeing the joy of dance being passed down through the generations is one of the gifts Mrs Evans’s profession provides.

“I’ve had students that started with me at age four and are now all grown up and I am teaching their daughter, so it has come full circle which is just amazing,” Mrs Evans said.

While thrilled her school was named a joint winner, Mrs Evans said she was concerned at the use of the word “best” as she believed every dance school had their own benefits and were beloved by their students.

“We have a really lovely dance community down here in Tasmania.”

Jenina’s Dance Workshop teaches students aged 18 months and upwards in myriad styles including classical ballet, jazz, hip-hop, musical theatre, contemporary, acrobatics and more.

House of Dance declined to participate in the article.
