ABOUT BLOOMING TIME FOR SPRING

- ANNIE MCCANN

THE to-and-fro between summer-like sunshine and winter chill, coupled with gusty northerly winds, can mean only one thing – spring is here.

Forage Flowers owner Claire Hall’s stall on the corner of Cilwen and Acton roads, Cambridge, has become more fragrant and colourful, as everything she sells is grown or hand-picked seasonally.

“A lot of bulbs for tulips are coming up and we’re using a lot of the blossom from fruiting trees in our bouquets,” Ms Hall said.

“As the weather warms up I certainly see more sales and an increase in inquiries and wedding flowers. From September right through until Easter it’s really busy.”

Ms Hall said she was planting more flowers as the daffodils were flourishing and gladiolus and lilies were preparing to bloom.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Belinda House said the unpredictable season was arriving in typical fashion, with wind gusts blowing through Tasmania on Tuesday.

Ms House said Wednesday – the first calendar day of spring – would be fine across the state, with mid to high teen maximum temperatures predicted, including 18C in Hobart. Temperatures are expected to rise on Thursday, hitting 24C in Hobart and likely passing 20C across the rest of the state, with the possible exception of the North-West.

Friday is expected to reach 20C with showers in Hobart, but the weekend will bring another cold change, with maximums plummeting to 13C and 14C on Saturday and Sunday.

“It’s spring, so the weather’s ramping up with warmth and winter bursts,” Ms House said.
