RETIREMENT COOKING FOR SAUSAGE KINGS

- JUDY AUGUSTINE

A CYGNET couple have put their pride and joy on the market after spending 27 years running a bratwurst stall at the Salamanca Market.

Henni Veit and husband Michael started Silver Hill Bratwurst after migrating from Germany.

“The company in Melbourne that sponsored my husband, they had gone bankrupt and there were no jobs,” Mrs Veit said.

“I was a high school teacher teaching German but there was no demand. My husband was a civil engineer but it wasn’t recognised at the time. We had just entered Tasmania, we had to come up with something to make a living.”

The couple bought a stall at Salamanca Market and have watched it expand over the years.

“I did it the first year on my own and after that we found it was viable and expanded,” Mrs Veit said.

“My husband gave up his job as a

building inspector and joined me. We grew and became bigger and bigger. We have four big barbecues with a maximum of 400 sausages cooking at a time.”

Mrs Veit said it was very popular and they held the title of Sausage King for a few years.

“My husband is 75 in November and I’m 69, it’s time to retire. On one hand I would be relieved to move on, but on the other hand this is our baby and it’s sad to see it go,” she said.
