Shock as Llanherne beaten in quarters
PITTWATER Golf Club hosted the qualifying and quarterfinal rounds of the Southern Country Golf Association’s RHL Roberts Memorial Trophy last weekend.
In Sunday morning’s qualifying round, Llanherne’s Dean Young and Tom North emerged from a quality field with a two-over-par 72.
The pair qualified in first place, one stroke ahead of Kingston Beach’s Matthew Glover and David Pretyman on three-over 73.
The top eight qualifiers moved into the quarter-finals of this prestigious foursomes match-play event conducted on Sunday afternoon.
Quarter-final victories went to Tea Tree Golf Club’s Dylan Backhouse and Kyedon Grueber, who defeated the number one qualifiers, Llanherne, 2&1.
John Milbourne and Stuart Bonnitcha from Tasmania Golf Club overcame Claremont’s Simon Direen and Luke Frith 4&3 in an exciting encounter.
Kingston Beach Golf Club’s Glover and Pretyman comfortably accounted for Huon Valley’s Mark Keough and Geoffrey Griggs 7&6, while Pittwater’s Archer and Reynolds defeated North West Bay Golf Club’s Criag O’Keefe and Brad Carver 4&2.
The semi-finals and final will be hosted by the Kingston Beach Golf Club on September 12 when Backhouse and Grueber take on Tasmania’s Milbourne and Bonnitcha in the first semi-final, and Glover and Pretyman meet Archer and Reynolds in the second.
In the combined Women’s Southern Open Foursomes Championship held at Claremont Golf Club, defending champions Mackenzie Wilson and Mackenzie Thomas, both members of Royal Hobart and Tasmania Golf Clubs, won the event with a round of 49.
Runners-up Lesley Bick and Sally Eastwood from the Royal Hobart Golf Club had 53.
