FOREST FOR THE TREES

DEFORESTATION, according to Resources Minister Guy Barnett does not occur in Tasmania.

His point is because native forest is replaced with single species plantation and regrowth there is no net loss of forest. The Minister’s premise is native forest and regrowth are the same.

Australia is up there with Brazil and Indonesia as deforestation hot spots of the world. A forest is an ecosystem filled with life and providing services such as air, water and carbon sequestration.

Deforestation is the No.2 CO2 source that drives climate change. Native forest destruction must end.
