Relief at food ban rethink

-

YOU can still send comfort cheese to your loved ones in lockdown, with Australia Post changing on its plans to ban the shipping of food and perishable goods.

The news came as an incredible relief to Hobart cheesemonger Nick Haddow, whose business currently depends heavily on deliveries due to interstate lockdowns.

Mr Haddow’s Bruny Island Cheese and Beer Co used to rely heavily on tourists and interstate travellers from the mainland, but was forced to rapidly switch up its business model due to border closures.

“We can resume our directto-consumer side of our business which, at a time like this, is really important for businesses like mine and small producers around Tasmania,” Mr Haddow said.

“I’m very, very pleased that Australia Post has seen the error of their ways and decided to reverse the decision they were going to make.”

Mr Haddow said he had mates on the mainland who he was regularly sending care packages to as a way of providing consolation for being stuck in lockdown.

Hobart senator Jonathan Duniam said the decision was a relief for Tasmania businesses hit hard by the lockdowns.
