You can’t bluff this

- ANNIE McCANN

LEGENDARY director Tim Bonython’s adrenaline-pumping surf doco-series showcases four of the world’s most insane swells, with a bone-breaking Tassie episode to kick things off.

Bonython has made it his life’s work to document big wave surfers.

“That split second’s everything to them and everything to me. If I can put that into a film and make people go ‘wow’, then my job’s done,” the 62-year-old said.

His latest documentary Swell Chasers shows surfers taking on four dangerous breaks in four episodes, the first on Shipstern Bluff, or “Shippies”, on Cape Raoul in Tasmania.

NSW surfer Justin “Jughead” Allport came down for the trip.

“Jughead had a few issues and had some pretty big wipe-outs to deal with,” Bonython said.

“He wiped out and hit the bottom really hard. He didn’t even notice but he broke his back.”

But Jughead pushed on to keep surfing, until he broke six ribs.

Swell Chasers will premiere on Foxtel’s brand new channel, FOX DOCOS, 7.40pm on Thursday.
