The Fish Van tops seafood vote

- CHELSEA COSGRAVE

THE Mercury cast the net far and wide in search of Tasmania’s best fish and chips and a food van on the East Coast has claimed the top title.

Hundreds of eateries from across the state were nominated – from boat-to-table shacks to city pubs – but it was The Fish Van at Triabunna that was voted No.1 by readers for its succulent seafood and crispy batter.

Cara Wilson has owned the popular eatery for eight years and said each day was busy.

“Over summer, I can cook up to 70kg of fish a day,” she said.

“From November to the end of Easter it’s flat out and Sunday is our busiest day every week – it doesn’t matter if it’s raining or the sun is shining.”

A popular spot for those visiting Maria Island, tourists and locals alike can be spotted tucking into The Fish Van’s famous seafood basket and scrumptious flake and gummy shark – a staple that has customers coming back for seconds.

The Fish Van sits just metres from a fleet of fishing boats, ensuring fresh produce.

“We cook it with love and every piece is fresh from local waters,” Ms Wilson said.
