CAREER CHANGE REALLY COOKING

- JARROD LAWLER

A CHINESE man who moved to Tasmania to study computing has continued his drastic career change by opening his second Chinese restaurant in Hobart.

Former University of Tasmania student Roy Wang moved to the state in 2011 to study a Bachelor of

Computing but after completing his master’s degree decided to buy a stake in a Sandy Bay restaurant and has never looked back.

“In 2017 I purchased a 50 per cent share in my Sandy Bay restaurant as an investment while I looked for a computing job,” Mr Wang said.

“However, everything changed when my business partner got sick

and had to move back to Melbourne so I became the sole director of the restaurant and so all of a sudden I had no time for a computing career.”

Four years later and Mr Wang’s original restaurant, Big Wong Szechwan Cuisine, is still going strong and he has now opened his second restaurant Big Wong BBQ on Elizabeth St.

The 31-year-old said his new restaurant specialised in Cantonesestyle roast meats using traditional cooking techniques from China.

Mr Wang said he had no plans to get back into computing.

“I’m very happy not having to work a 9 to 5 job,” he laughed.

“My job is to keep my eyes on my staff and I’m happy doing that.”
