Tiger tails to keep workers safe

- ANNIE MCCANN

THE power lines over one of Hobart’s busiest streets have recently been accessorised with colour, but the change has a purpose.

Flashing circles attached to the power lines on Davey St, Hobart, are not for decorative purposes.

They are also not in place to deter birds of prey.

Many rural powerlines have installed the red and yellow circles, known as tiger tails, to prevent wedge tailed eagles from flying into them.

A Department of State Growth spokeswoman confirmed the tiger tails were helping keep road workers and their construction machinery safe.

“Visual warning devices, known as tiger tails, have been installed on powerlines on Davey St from Barrack St to

Molle St as part of the road surface repair and renewal project,” the spokeswoman said.

“Initial works are under way on the project, with work on rebuilding the road to start in late September.

“We expect to complete the work by the end of 2021.”

Works will continue between 6.30pm and 6.30am from Sunday to Thursday each week.
