Trump’s swing at commentary

- The Times

Donald Trump has finally answered questions about whether he would return to the ring.

The former president, 75, who used to be a boxing promoter, will provide commentary on the comeback of another ageing heavyweight, Evander Holyfield, in a oneoff fight on Saturday.

Holyfield, 58, retired 10 years ago, but is back as a late replacement for Oscar de la

Hoya, who has Covid-19. He will fight Vitor Belfort, 44, a former champion in mixed martial arts.

For Mr Trump, who has refused to accept his own knockout at the polls to Joe Biden in November, the Florida fight will keep him in the public eye and retain a connection with his voter base.

“I love great fighters and great fights,” Mr Trump said in a press release announcing the plans. “I look forward to seeing both this Saturday night and sharing my thoughts.”

Boxing News wrote last year, “love him or loathe him, it should be remembered that at one time Trump wielded as much power within boxing as he does in today’s political arena”.

Mr Trump will provide commentary along with his eldest son, Don Jr, on HBO.
