NEW FAMILY CAFE HOPES TO SHARE ITALIAN CULTURE

- JUDY AUGUSTINE

THE owners of a new Italian cafe in Hobart hope to share a slice of culture with their customers after they recently opened on Murray St.

Manager of Caffe Allegro Genevieve White said the family-owned cafe sold plenty of Italian treats and aimed to use locally grown produce.

“We have lots of beautiful traditional Italian cakes and biscotti, we have a traditional tiramisu,” Ms White said.

“We have cannoli, which is the southern Italian style, it’s filled with ricotta and hazelnuts.

“The idea I had when we were starting was having a beautiful area to have morning tea. “It’s a bit cosy and a bit hidden.”

Ms White said she and her family hoped to share their Italian culture with Hobart.

“My mum has The Farmhouse Kitchen near Cygnet, she teaches about food from Puglia. So this comes from my mum’s passion for telling people about our culture.”

Ms White said the cafe already had one enthusiastic regular – her nonna.

“My nonna is 93 and she is quite incredible, she inspires me every day, she’s gorgeous,” she said.

“It’s very much a family business, Nonna loves coming in when she can.”
