A GENEROUS dusting of snow decorated the peaks of kunanyi/Mt Wellington on Tuesday, with more snow on the cards for the weekend.

Families made the most of the snowy spring season, including young dad Graeme Heaney whose daughters had never seen snow before.

“It was really good; a lot more snow than we thought. It was very cold but there was no wind,” Mr Heaney said.

Brisbane tourist Jade Stenson took on the mountain with her energetic 11-yearold Ethan and seven-year-old Serena, who are big fans of mountain hiking.

“We actually didn’t know to expect that much snow. We just headed up on to the lookout point and the kids were really excited when they realised how much snow there was,” Ms Stenson said.

“We’re heading to Cradle Mountain next, so we thought there might be some more snow around that area.”

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Luke Johnston said more snow was forecast for the mountain over the weekend.

By Monday, Mr Johnston estimated the snow would reach to about the 500m mark on kunanyi/Mt Wellington.

“The snow on the mountain was a combination of showers that fell in a relatively cold air mass early this week,” Mr Johnston said.

“That cold air is going to linger over us and slowly warm up towards the end of the week. Then it’s looking like a proper set of cold fronts on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.”
