ASK FOR REFUND

- TODAY’S TEXT

“FREEDOM of conscience” is a phrase LGBTIQ people have heard a lot in recent years because it has been used to dignify discrimination against us by everyone from bakers to GPs who want to refuse us services.

During the pandemic we have seen “freedom of conscience” re-purposed to mean shirking lockdown restrictions or not taking the vaccine, with the latest example being a call by the Catholic Medical Association to allow Catholic priests and health workers to go unvaccinated if they have a “conscientious objection”.

But the underlying objective is the same as it is with LGBTIQ discrimination, to obtain a special privilege not available to others and to exercise that privilege even if it does harm to others.

“Freedom of conscience” is essential to a liberal democracy like ours. This is why it is so important that we do not allow that freedom to be abused to justify privilege and perpetrate harm. Rodney Croome
