Premier League duo earns call-up

- ADAM CLIFFORD

TWO Premier League stars have received national recognition, selected in a National Development Squad and Over-Aged Combined team.

Derwent’s Eliza Westland, who will feature in Saturday’s grand final from 1.30pm, and North-West Graduates Grace Calvert were informed of their selection and were set to compete in a unique Hockey Australia Domestic Series, until it was postponed due to COVID-19.

The four-team competition involving the National Junior Squad, was aimed at providing opportunities for nationals selectors to track athlete progression and development ahead of the Hockey One League.

The teams were a selection of athletes who have missed significant development and identification opportunities in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid, who Hockey Australia feel have potential to push for further senior squad opportunities.

“I was really looking forward to attending, which makes it disappointing now it’s postponed,” Calvert said. “It’s excellent that Hockey Australia are looking for more diverse pathways that support slightly older or unidentified athletes.”

In the case of Westland, who had 2020 away from the sport, the recognition has fuelled her motivation to improve and contribute strongly with the Tassie Tigers, coached by Luke Doerner.

“The news provided me with confidence and a drive to continue to work on my weaknesses to become a better player,” Westland said. “Moving into Hockey One, I am motivated to be as well prepared for the tournament as possible, both individually and collectively with the Tigers girls.”
