HCC joins fight for Dynnyrne

- JUDY AUGUSTINE

HOBART City Council will urge the state government to consider alternative solutions to demolishing homes along the Southern Outlet in order to make way for a fifth lane to ease traffic congestion.

The council will seek to meet Transport Minister Michael Ferguson to discuss its submission on the southern roads projects.

Councillor Helen Burnett said the concerns of residents whose homes have been earmarked to be compulsorily acquired should be included in the council’s submission.

“Dynnyrne Road residents have really been suffering as a result of some clumsy public consultation in relation to putting in the fifth lane,” Cr Burnett said.

Alderman Damon Thomas said the plan for a fifth lane was a “disaster”.

“We’ve seen no proper attempt here by the government to justify this decision four years after it started,” he said.

“We do know the costs have blown out, we do know the citizens are outraged by it.

“I think on behalf of the city, we should … be out in force trying to stop this.”
