Domestic issues must be politicians’ priority

- Neil Cranston Battery Point

THE Morrison government is practicing the oft-used strategy when they need to distract and deflect attention from their own problems such as their failure to secure sufficient vaccine supplies early in the pandemic and their denial of the now urgent need to address climate issues among others.

What do they do? Talk up threats to the security and safety of Australians. They fail to see threats in their denials regarding climate! The strategy has worked before and may work again.

The AUKUS with the US (a rapidly declining world power) and the UK (who will do anything to garner friends post-Brexit) is a sham. Unfortunately, part of it involves wasting billions of dollars for a product we never got (conventional submarines) and now more billions for a product we don’t need or want (nuclear submarines).

Coupled with Peter Dutton’s dangerous posturing over China, we see a continuing subservience to the US that can potentially lead to some real threats in the future. Many Australians would like to see the same amount of billions of dollars spent on health, education, the climate, domestic violence and homelessness among multiple real issues facing Australians rather than be subjected to a subtle fear campaign that threatens to deliver very little that enhances our quality of life while, at best, providing some handy photo opportunities for the next election.
