Sandfly intersection upgrade now complete

- JUDY AUGUSTINE

CONSTRUCTION of an intersection at a high incident stretch of road on the Huon Highway at Sandfly has been completed after work started in February this year.

The intersection is known to have “a poor crash history”, with more than 30 crashes at the site over the past 10 years.

The upgrades include a left-turn slip lane from Sandfly Rd south on to the highway, Huonville bound.

“Vehicles will be able to turn left at the intersection and accelerate up the hill in their own lane making it a safer entry for drivers using the Highway,” Infrastructure Minister Michael Ferguson said.

“A new deceleration lane takes traffic slowing down to turn left into Sandfly Rd towards Longley out of through-traffic on the Highway.”

It is hoped the upgrade will improve safety.

“The new intersection incorporates feedback from extensive community consultation,” Mr Ferguson said.

A crossing has also been added for cyclists and lighting has been improved.
