Fridge fail sparks fire

-

AN outdoor refrigerator has been blamed for a Mornington house fire, which caused about $500,000 worth of damage overnight on Tuesday.

Three Tasmania Fire Service crews from Hobart and Clarence were called to the scene on Akora St about 8pm Tuesday where the blaze was well alight and burning at the back of the house.

Investigator Tim McKay said the fire spread rapidly and caused extensive damage to the house costing about $500,000.

“While thankfully the occupants of the house were not home at the time of the fire last night, this is an opportune time to remind everyone of the importance of having a well-rehearsed evacuation plan and to ensure that all homes are fitted with working smoke alarms,” Mr McKay said.

“While there is nothing to suggest the appliance which caused last night’s fire was not in good working condition prior to the fire, I do encourage people to ensure that all household appliances are regularly checked to ensure that they are in good working order.”
