Government’s lack of humanity distressing

-

I WATCHED Australian Story (ABC, Sep 20) on the Muragappen family, Nades, Priya and their two little daughters, refugees escaping from Sri Lanka.

I thought I knew the story, but I was shocked, and horrified to learn that not only was the Australian government intent on returning them, but that they were aware Nades, as a young Tamil forced against his will to fight for the rebel Tigers, would be jailed at the very best if returned to Sri Lanka.

Also, that they would be aware that a previous returnee was pack raped and her husband jailed, and that is the horror awaiting Priya, who had already watched government soldiers burn her fiance alive before her eyes.

It appalls me that Australia is a nation which allows this to happen. I was once a proud Australian. It is clear that the Australian people and their morality are at odds with their government. Gillian Unicomb
