Young Giants are big winners in sporting grants
IT’s young talent time for footy players in the state’s south-east with the newly-formed junior Giants bolstered by a $7000 state government grant.
Money for the Giants, and 93 other Tasmanian sporting clubs, has come from tranche 4 of the Covid-19 Sport and Recreation grants. It will fund things such as player jumpers, training aids, first aid kits and coaches’ boxes.
“It means we can move forward and build on what we’ve already achieved, because money runs a club,” South East Junior Football Club president Scott Rawson said. “We’re a familyoriented club so parents can bring their kids here and they can enjoy themselves.”
Giants under-13 premiership captain Joshua Rawson encouraged others to pull on the boots: “It’s fun to go out on game day and play and have a good time.”
The development of a sports hub at Pembroke Park was a boon to the new basketball club South East Seabirds and inspired the South East Netball Club to seek a State League licence.
“It will allow us to offer the opportunity and provide a pathway for our grassroots players to have something to look forward to and keep them in the club if they want to play at a higher level,” netball club president Marsha Batchelor said.
