Garlick: Bevo made of right stuff

- MARK DUFFIELD

MELBOURNE might be premiership favourite but the Demons would be wise to not think that is going to bother Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge.

Fremantle chief executive Simon Garlick, the former Bulldogs boss who ran the coaching selection process that saw Beveridge hired, said the role of the underdog would suit Bevo and the Bulldogs. What the Dogs found in Beveridge, Garlick says, is a man who oozed selfconfidence – not to mention the fact that he already had a remarkable coaching record.

“At the time (of his interview for the Bulldogs’ coaching job) he had just been appointed by St Kilda as their director of coaching and it was a bit of a wrench for him because he is a loyal person and he had committed to that,” Garlick recalls.

“So to get him to go in the process in the first place was a bit of a stretch.

“Once he was in the process, his psychological profile was incredibly strong and he showed a great capacity to deal with challenging situations.

“One of the things that stood out for us with Bevo was his level of self-assuredness,” Garlick said.
