VAN HITS ROAD TO HELP NEEDY

- HELEN KEMPTON

CHARITY Vinnies has received the first of three new vans it was promised during the state election and it will service the North-West dishing up much-needed meals to the hungry.

The government committed $165,000 towards the purchase of three new vans, outlaying $60,000 per annum over three years.

Vinnies said the vans helped some of the most vulnerable people in Tasmania and during 2019-20, volunteers served up more than 21,000 freshly made, nourishing meals and countless cups of homemade hot soup, hot beverages and cold drinks.

“The new vehicle and $60,000 per year for the next three years to buy food and supplies will assist hundreds of disadvantaged families and individuals,” St Vincent de Paul Society chief executive Lara Alexander said.

The vans operate seven nights a week in Hobart, Launceston, Burnie, Somerset, Wynyard and Smithton.
