Sapphire next for Profiteer

- BRAD WATERS

CRACK colt Profiteer will drop back to his own age group for his next two runs after missing a place first-up in Friday night’s Group 1 Moir Stakes at The Valley.

Profiteer started a $3.40 favourite before finishing sixth, 2½ lengths from the winner Wild Ruler, when taking on the older sprinters for the first time in the $1m Moir Stakes.

Co-trainer Michael Kent Jr said Profiteer pulled up well after the Moir, which he said did not pan out well for the three-year- old.

“We were a bit of a meat in the sandwich with Ballistic Lover on the inside and Swats That on the outside,” said Kent Jr, who trains Profiteer in partnership with Mick Price.

“He’s a young, inexperienced colt up against those more experienced horses.

“He got into an awful spot. It’s just the way it worked out.”

Kent Jr said Profiteer would have his next start in the Group 3 Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on October 13.

The stable will use the $200,000 race to prime Profiteer for the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes down the Flemington straight on October 30.

“He’ll be hard to beat in the Blue Sapphire and the Coolmore will suit him beautifully,” Kent Jr said.
