Young talent time for state golfing’s Next Gen

- JARROD LAWLER

THE NEXT generation of Tasmania golfers were taken through their paces at the Royal Hobart Golf Course on Monday as part of Golf Australia’s regional development sessions. The Golf Australia initiative is designed for golfers aged between 8 and 16 and features PGA professional coaches teaching the youngsters about all facets of the game.

Golf development manager for Tasmania Simon Weston said the first session was a huge success. “It went really well. We were hoping for 30 kids and 45 turned up so it was a fantastic turn out,” he said. “The youngest golfer was 7 years old and the ages went up to 15 years old and the response has been so great that we are looking to do the sessions each school holidays.” Mr Weston said golf was a growing sport and the aim of the sessions were to allow for more specific coaching to fast track the young golfers development. “Golf is going through a resurgence in popularity over the last 18 months and so these sessions are aimed at moving the juniors that attend on to the next phase of the junior golf development pathway,” he said.

Mr Weston said the initiative will also feature sessions held in other areas of the state with a session to be held in Launceston on Friday followed by one in Devonport on Monday.
