Academic to watch over war crimes
EMINENT Hobart academic and globally recognised scholar Tim McCormack has been reappointed to his role as special adviser on war crimes at The Hague.
Professor McCormack (below) is one of 17 special advisers from across the globe appointed to the International Criminal Court by new prosecutor Karim Khan QC – alongside the likes of Amal Clooney.
The former law faculty dean at the University of Tasmania is The Hague’s only special adviser from Australia, and is now also the court’s longest serving, having been originally appointed by prosecutor Luis Ocampo in 2010.
Prof McCormack will continue his role from Hobart, with his reappointment allowing for successive scholarship winners from UTAS to work as his legal assistants at his Netherlands office.
He is also currently working with Kate Warner, former governor of Tasmania, consulting with the state’s Aboriginal people to map out a “pathway to truth – telling and a treaty” with the government.
Prof McCormack is also special adviser on international humanitarian law to The Hague’s International Court of Justice prosecutor and is a director of World Vision Australia.
