Racing aims for 11,500 Cup crowd

- PETER ROLFE

MELBOURNE Cup organisers will push to have crowds of up to 11,500 for the race.

The Victoria Racing Club has submitted revised plans to the Victorian government, in a bid to stop the great race being staged without spectators for the second straight year.

The plan would also see crowds of up to 11,500 for the other three days of the cup carnival – Victoria

Derby, Emirates Stakes and Oaks days.

VRC chief executive Steve Rosich had hoped for crowds of up to 60,000 but confirmed the revised spectator targets in a statement.

“We have lodged plans with the Victorian government for a crowd of up to 11,500 for some or all four days of the Melbourne Cup carnival,’’ Mr Rosich said. “We look forward to sharing the details of plans as soon as we secure feedback from the relevant authorities.”
