TEENS HANDED ‘CANES CHANCE

- JARROD LAWLER jarrod.lawler@news.com.au

THE HOBART Hurricanes have only one roster spot remaining on its squad for the upcoming WBBL campaign after the signings of up and coming teenagers Ruth Johnston and Angelina Genford.

Eighteen-year-old Johnston hails from Queensland where the allrounder is considered one of the sport’s brightest young prospects.

Johnston was a member of the Queensland Fire squad that won the Women’s

National Cricket League last season and also scored over 800 runs in Queensland’s Premier League competition to win the Kat Smith Medal for the competition’s best young player.

“I’m really excited to secure my first WBBL contract with the Hurricanes,” Johnston said.

“With the fact that the competition is going to be starting down in Tasmania, it really is going to be such a great experience getting around the group, meeting everyone, and just learning as much as I can.”

Fellow 18-year-old Angelina Genford is a promising young pace bowler from Sydney. “It really is a bit of a dream come true,” Genford said. “I know that is a bit of a clichéd thing to say, but, like every cricketer, I just want to learn as much as I can and take in the experiences that the game brings me.”

The signings come on the back of the news that allrounder Rachel Trenaman has suffered a torn ACL during a training session and will miss the entire WBBL|07.

“I’m gutted that I sustained such a major injury so early in the pre-season and am disappointed I won’t be able to experience what it’s like playing as a Hurricane this year,” Trenaman said.

“I am, however, still looking forward to being around the group and contributing off-field during the tournament’s initial matches in Tassie, and am really looking forward to being fit and raring to go come WBBL|08 next year.”

The Hurricanes are expected to announce an international signing next week as its final signing.
