HUNT MAKES HISTORY WITH FREYCINET WIN
HISTORY was made at the Freycinet Challenge on Sunday with Hobart’s Alex Hunt claiming a record sixth individual Freycinet Challenge title in the gruelling competition’s 20year existence.
Over two days, the intense outdoor challenge requires participants of the individual event to paddle, pedal and run more than 160km over eight stages through the East Coast’s pristine Freycinet wilderness.
Record-breaking Hunt went into the event’s second and final day with a comfortable lead after a dominant day-one performance and in a typical Tasmanian day involving weather from all four seasons the star endurance athlete held on to win his sixth title ahead of Toby Pitt and Alex’s younger brother, Robbie, in third place.
“It was an absolutely fantastic effort by Alex and to now hold the record and be the only athlete to have won the event six times is an incredible effort,” said event organiser Louise Padgett.
In the open female category, running machine Georgia Nesbitt crossed the line first ahead of Alison Van Dongen and Sorcha Flett, while in the overall team event Neptune’s Crew claimed victory.
Ms Padgett said the event was a huge success with an increase of more than 200 competitors since its last running in 2019.
“We had huge numbers this year with over 450 competitors, which was fantastic,” she said.
“It was great to finish the day with clear sunny skies and seeing the grins on all the faces, and we hope people continue to join in on what is a great event in a beautiful location.”
