- JARROD LAWLER

TASMANIA’S under-16 Boys basketball team won a bronze medal at the 2021 Australian junior basketball championships in Darwin on Sunday after a thrilling win over powerhouse Western Australia Metro.

After going down to Queensland South in the semi-final the Tasmanian boys were pitted against WA Metro in a playoff for bronze in a match that saw the

Tasmanians come from behind in the dying moments for a memorable 59-58 victory.

After WA Metro missed two crucial free throws with less than 10 seconds remaining, the nail-biting victory came down to the last second of the match.

Tassie’s Lachy May went to the foul line with 0.8 seconds left after being fouled on a layup attempt with his team down 57-58.

Although May had only gone one from three from the foul line to that point, the young hooper displayed nerves of steel to calmly sink both free throws to put the Tasmanians in front.

With no time-outs left Western Australia Metro was unable to get a shot off, following the successful free throws.

The Tasmanians held on to be crowned bronze medalist winner.

In the girl’s competition the state’s U16 side finished seventh after defeating the Northern Territory in their final game.
