Mona upgrades win approval
PLANS for the creation of a tunnel and the extension of the existing ferry terminal at Mona are a step closer, with the Glenorchy planning committee voting unanimously to grant a permit for the development.
The proposed tunnel will be dug through to the basement entrance of the museum from the ferry landing and will provide greater access to the museum from the jetty, rather than visitors having to walk up the stairs.
“The tunnel will provide access for those with some special needs to access the museum during opening hours,” Mona’s major projects director, Stephen Devereaux, said at the meeting.
Alderman Jan Dunsby welcomed news of the improved access.
“That the accessibility of the site will be better for some people is really pleasing to hear,” she said.
The works will require tunnel excavation and the removal of rock on the foreshore.
The plans also include the development of an additional outdoor gallery space, including a platform for temporary installations, located adjacent to Spectra.
The platform would have a maximum height of 5.4m.
Project officer Chantelle Griffin said there were little concerns raised about the project.
“During the advertisement period, no representations were received; however, there was a late letter of concern raising the issue of heritage and screening along the foreshore,” Ms Griffin said.
“The proposal has been recommended for approval with a number of conditions,” she said.
