GRAND SALUTE RESULTS IN CUP PENALTY OF 1KG

- BRAD WATERS

BART Cummings winner Grand Promenade will have another 1kg to carry when he lines up in next month’s Melbourne Cup.

But Australian racing’s newest sensation Incentivise did not earn a Caulfield Cup penalty for his fighting win in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes.

The set weights and penalties conditions of the Turnbull Stakes means the winner cannot receive a weight penalty for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

Incentivise will carry 55.5kg in the Caulfield Cup.

The Peter Moody-trained galloper could earn a Melbourne Cup weight penalty if he wins the Caulfield Cup.

Grand Promenade booked his place in the Melbourne Cup field by earning a ballot exemption for the $8m event with his impressive win in last Saturday’s $750,000 Flemington feature.

TAB promoted Grand Promenade to $15 in Melbourne Cup betting after the galloper’s latest win.

Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper Greg Carpenter penalised Grand Promenade’s win in line with other recent winners of the Bart Cummings.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Grand Promenade will now carry 52kg in the Melbourne Cup.

The last two Bart Cummings winners, Surprise Baby and Persan, received 1kg Melbourne Cup penalties.

Both horses finished fifth in the Melbourne Cup in their respective years.

Almandin also received a 1kg penalty before going on to win the Melbourne Cup in 2016.

Warrnambool-trained mare Rose Of Tralee moved to 31st in the Melbourne Cup order of entry after finishing second in the Bart Cummings.

Montefilia received a 1kg Caulfield and Melbourne Cup penalty for her narrow win in the Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap in Sydney.

Caulfield Cup hopefuls have three more chances to earn a ballot exemption for Saturday week’s $5m race – Saturday’s Group 1 Might And Power (2000m), the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) and next Wednesday’s Group 3 Coongy Handicap (2000m).
