Man in court over pedestrian’s death

A MOONAH man has faced court charged with causing the death of a person by negligent driving.

On Tuesday, 55-year-old Allan Charles Kelly faced the Hobart Magistrates Court, but did not enter a plea.

He has been charged with causing death by negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a drivers’ license, dating back to the alleged incident during September 2019.

Mr Kelly’s lawyer, Craig Rainbird, told the court he’d received hundreds of pages of documents, CCTV footage and a record of interview last Tuesday and there was “a lot to digest” before the matter could proceed.

Magistrate Michael Daly continued Mr Kelly’s bail, ordering he return to court on December 13 to enter a plea.

The Mercury previously reported a 39year-old pedestrian died after allegedly being struck by a car at the intersection of Argyle and Collins Streets.

The woman, a United Kingdom citizen, was rushed to Royal Hobart Hospital but pronounced dead a short time later.

According to Tasmania Police at the time, the driver, then 53, was uninjured.
