DODGY BRIDGE SHUTS TOURIST ROAD

- HELEN KEMPTON

IT USED to be called the Road to Nowhere and now it really is.

A wooden bridge deemed dodgy by engineers has put the now-named Western Explorer link between Temma and Corinna out of action.

Owners of the Corinna Wilderness Experience said they had been advised the link between Corinna and Balfour had been closed and would likely stay shut for about a week.

“Most people call us before they take off anyway so we can advise them that route is closed but they can come via Savage River or Zeehan,” the owners said.

“We don’t imagine it will cause too much disruption.”

The Department of State Growth on Wednesday said the road had been closed to through traffic so engineering assessments could be done on the Lindsay River Bridge. A routine maintenance inspection had earlier identified a damaged beam on the single-lane timber bridge.

People wanting to travel between Corinna and locations north of Lindsay River, such as Temma, Marrawah and Togari, will need to take alternative routes.

“These unfortunately will add significant time to your journey. Signs warning of the closure have been placed at key detour points,” a department spokesman said.

Engineers will inspect the bridge on Monday to determine what repairs may be needed and how long the bridge will be shut.
