Woman rescued from lift

- CAMERON WHITELEY

A WOMAN was briefly stuck inside a lift after a mechanical fault in the lift’s motor at a Hobart CBD building on Friday night.

Tasmania Fire Service crews responded to an alarm at the Hobart Council Centre building on the corner of Davey and Elizabeth streets about 7pm (pictured).

TFS station officer Jason Klug said a motor on top of a lift, in the lift shaft, had burnt out and caused smoke that spread throughout the building’s top three levels.

“There was a lady stuck inside the lift and the firefighters helped her get out of the lift,’’ he said.

Mr Klug said the woman was trapped in the lift for about 5-10 minutes before being freed and was uninjured.

The TFS remained on the scene for some time, monitoring the motor and ventilating the smoke out of the building.

It is the second such incident at the same building in the space of a month, after a fire in the lift motor room saw hundreds of people evacuated.
