LOCAL SHOP OPENS BOOK FOR BIG DAY

- JARROD LAWLER

BOOK lovers and even their pet pooches will be welcome at a popular Hobart bookstore on Saturday as it celebrates national Love Your Bookshop Day.

As part of the annual celebration aimed at highlighting what makes local bookshops great, Fullers Bookshop on Collins St will host a number of fun competitions along with a photo booth for any four-legged visitors who want to join in the celebrations. Fullers owner Tim Jarvis said the celebration was an important day for local independent bookstores after the difficulties of the pandemic.

“While businesses like Amazon have been going gangbusters during the pandemic, smaller independent bricks and mortar stores have been struggling to survive and community support matters now more than ever,” Dr Jarvis said.

“Bookshops are such dynamic spaces that really are a part of the cultural and creative life of Australians and we are personally so grateful with how our local community has supported us during these tough times,” he said.

Fullers will hold a colouring-in competition, a Haiku challenge for those with a knack for poetry and a “blind date” which features a variety of classic books wrapped and hidden in brown paper bags and sold at a bargain price.

Fullers Bookshop will be open from 9am to 5pm on Saturday.
