PUSH TO GET YOU HOOKED ON FISHING

- KENJI SATO

PLANS to help reel people in to the sport of fishing were released by the government on Sunday, coinciding with national Gone Fishing Day.

The “Strategy to Increase Participation in Tasmania’s Inland Recreational Fishery 2021-28” includes a range of programs to catch more people in the sport’s net.

Someone who needs no encouragement is avid angler Freia Aleksa, 10, who drags her mum, dad and sister out on fishing trips.

“I like catching fish and seeing what they look like,” Freia said.

“I go fishing nearly every Wednesday when I go with my Dad.”

New Norfolk Licenced Anglers Association president Laurie Harrison is passing on fishing tips to his grandkids, who are just getting into the sport.

He hopes the government’s plan will get more young fishermen and women out on the water and enjoying the great outdoors.

“It’s a brilliant idea, especially for the children,” Mr Harrison said.

Primary Industries Minister Guy Barnett said the government was scrapping junior inland angling fees, holding events and revamping facilities to get more Tasmanians into fishing.
