Rosebery ready to prove it’s worth

- CAMERON WHITELEY

A WEST Coast miner says it is poised to target net zero emissions by 2050, believing it is well placed because it produces metals important to achieving a low carbon economy.

MMG Rosebery Mine has been operating continuously for the past 85 years, predominantly mining zinc, copper and lead concentrates.

With a 500-strong workforce, the mine is among the major operators in Tasmania alongside other West Coast mines Renison (tin), Savage River (magnetite), Henty (gold) and the Cornwall coalmine in northeast Tasmania.

The Rosebery mine’s environment manager Wendy Hodgetts said MMG would join many other mining companies to target net zero emissions by 2050.

“While we don’t have all the solutions yet, here at Rosebery, we have a significant contribution to make by producing metals critical to a low carbon economy; and by reducing our own emissions and working with the Rosebery community to adapt to changes,’’ she said.

“The metals we produce, predominantly copper and zinc, are some of the building blocks used in sustainable technologies such as solar panels, wind turbines, electric vehicles, and large-scale batteries to name just a few.”
