Tigers tamed by Maroons
THE Tassie Tigers women have gone down 5-0 under lights to Queensland in front of a strong crowd, before the men put on a real show before fading to fall 8-2.
Queensland opened the scoring in the fifth minute before Tigers keeper Kacee Ponting denied the conversion opportunity.
A controversial set piece saw the visitors double their advantage before Tassie fired agonisingly wide through Philly Bridley and then Beth Dobbie.
The sides entered half-time after Queensland added a late third, before again Tassie responded in the second half with goalkeeper Evie Dalton, McCambridge and Bridley all performing well. The score line would flatter the visitors when they scored and converted with virtually the last play of the match.
“Great to have the opportunity to play against high quality opposition, which Queensland clearly are,” Tigers women’s coach Luke Doerner said.
“Fantastic experience for all our group and all thirty players in our extended squad were able to feature during the series.” The Tigers men overcame a slow start to dominate the opening half of their clash, falling 1-0 behind after eight minutes.
Young goalkeeper Magnus McCausland was on hand to deny the conversion opportunity before Tassie wrestled control of the match and generated the next seven scoring shots, including Harvey Bessell’s golden chance that was millimetres from crossing the goal line.
After failing with five penalty corner chances, Tasmania finally found the net through Sam McCulloch with just seventeen seconds remaining in the half. Queensland responded by scoring the next five goals.
