Open cut coal mine

-

Open-cut mining (or strip mining) involves digging, drilling and blasting to remove the coal for processing. “Overburden” or waste rock material, must be removed before the actual resource can be mined.

It uses large machinery to move soil, extract coal and transport them for processing. Thick horizontal coal seams situated not too far below the surface are suitable for this type of large-scale mining.
