Super over decides super contest

- JARROD LAWLER

CRICKET fans were treated to a nailbiting WBBL|07 clash between the Brisbane Heat and the Perth Scorchers on Sunday with the match being decided by the competition’s first super over of the summer.

After the Scorchers posted a respectable score of 7-137 on the back of openers Beth Mooney (40 off 37) and Sophie Devine (19 off 12), along with a late cameo from Chloe Piparo (20 off 14), the Heat was able to chase down the total in dramatic fashion when all-rounder Nicola Hancock showed nerves of steel to send the final ball of the innings to deep midon for two runs to tie the match after 40 overs and trigger a super over.

With the Heat up first to the crease in the super over they sent in heavy hitting sisters Grace Harris and Laura Kimmince to make their mark.

After a single from Grace Harris she was thrown in the deep end by her older sister when Kimmince forced a single which resulted in the run out of Harris to leave the Heat at 1-1 off the first two deliveries.

South African Anneke Bosch then took her place at the crease and did her best to get the Heat across the line with a knock of 11 runs off the remaining four balls, including two fours, to give the heat a total of 12 runs in the super over.

Needing 13 runs to win the Scorchers sent in Sophie Devine and Beth Mooney and Devine sent Jess Jonassen’s first delivery back over her head for six to put the Scorchers in the box seat.

After singles from both batters, Devine took the match into her own hands and hit her second six of the super over to win the match for the Heat and stamp herself the hero with a super over knock of 13 off just three deliveries.

It was the first match of the competition for both sides

Brisbane will look to avenge its loss to Perth when the two sides meet again on Tuesday at 4.50pm at Blundstone Arena.
