Sandy Bay bowl over their rivals

- CONNOR MUNNINGS

THE first round of the Bowls Tasmania South 2021-22 Thursday Women’s Pennant Division 1 was held on Tuesday.

Last year’s premiers in Sandy Bay hosted Kingborough in the tightest match of the round, with only three shots the difference.

Sandy Bay came out 9-3 victors thanks to a four-shot win to Robyn Legget’s rink of Jacqueline Phillips, Jan Hobbs and Jann Baxter over Leonie Price.

Sandy Bay’s Chris Dowl and Kingborough’s Vicki Bannister played out a thrilling 18-18 draw, with the tight heads a feature of the game.

After a slow start, Bannister was able to crawl her way back to take the lead, but a five on the second last end to Dowl made sure the result was tied.

Kingborough recruit Sue Clark was the club’s only winner over Anne Whenn.

With scores level on the last end, Kingborough second Lee Shead was able to draw the shot to give Clark a 17-16 win.

Howrah showed their dominance on its synthetic indoor surface, winning on all rinks against Claremont.

With great support from her rink of Denise Tanner, Janet Rutherford and Anne Mullavey, Charon Foster defeated Claremont’s Jan McPherson 36-6.

Some brilliant draw bowls from Glenda Irvine helped Sandra Hawksley’s rink come from behind in the last four ends to defeat Maree Morgan 22-14.

The final rink saw Rosie Geeves beat Joy Voss by 15 shots.

A home ground advantage helped Sorell to a comfortable 10-2 victory over Rosny Park by 26 shots.

Sorell’s Faye Gardner and Rosny’s Ailsa Milburn had a tight tussle, but some great bowls from Gardner’s rink of Vicky Wakefield, Barbara Walker and Karen Scott saw them go on to win 36-17.

With brilliant leading from Shirley Hay, Kathy Matthews’ rink ran out 28-11 winners over Rosny’s Gaylene Ridgeway.

Rosny’s Christine McGrath was well supported by third Judith Sherrin to defeat Vicki Philp by 10 shots.

Buckingham were too good for Dover, winning 10-2 by 22 shots.

June Guy defeated Meg Wilson 28-14 and Christine Thompson beat Dawn Garland 29-17.

Sheryl Phillips was Dover’s only winning, defeating Jeanette Lane by four shots.
