WIN AND A THIRD FOR DUGGAN AT ELWICK

- PETER STAPLES

TRAINER Adrian Duggan took only two of his stable tenants to Elwick yesterday and walked away with a winner and third, both in the first race on the seven-event card.

Under His Eye emerged triumphant with Troy Baker aboard, while Duggan’s consistent mare Powerful Pebbles battled on gamely to grab third in a maiden over 1100m.

It was Duggan’s first win for the season in the thoroughbred code, but his standardbred training enterprise has been more fruitful.

The trainer expects Under His

Eye to develop into a handy galloper, but longer distances could be more to his liking.

“I thought they might have been a bit too nippy for him today, but he proved too good for them, and I am really excited about getting him over longer trips up to 1400m,” Duggan said.

Under His Eye was tried by three trainers in Victoria before finding his way to Duggan’s yard.

It was his sixth start for Duggan, producing two seconds before a short let-up in August.

Duggan says Powerful Pebbles isn’t far off breaking her maiden status.

The John Luttrell-trained Romary made up for a luckless second at her Tasmanian debut in Launceston with an impressive allthe-way win in The Mercury Maiden over 1400m.

Romary flashed home from near last to run second to Rich Clan in Launceston two weeks ago and on the strength of that effort she was heavily backed, firming from $6 to start the $3.80 secondelect.

Luttrell said the four-year-old grey mare has shown above average ability since landing in is care and should progress through the grades.
